Shuvuuia
From Mongolian 'shuvuu' (bird), meaning 'bird', reflecting its bird-like characteristics.
Shuvuuia is a genus of bird-like theropod dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period of Mongolia. It is a member of the family Alvarezsauridae, small coelurosaurian dinosaurs which are characterized by short but powerful forelimbs specialized for digging. The type (and only known) species is Shuvuuia deserti, or "desert bird". The name Shuvuuia is derived from the Mongolian word shuvuu (шувуу) meaning "bird".
Diagnosis
- Less compressed cervical centra with large pneumatic foramina compared to Mononykus
- Humeral deltopectoral crest that is continuous with its head, unlike the pillar-like crest of Mononykus
- Pubis of subcircular section
- Femoral and tibiotarsal shafts bowed lateromedially
- Sharp ridge on medial margin of distal tibiotarsus, unique among alvarezsaurids
- Articulation between quadrate and postorbital in skull
Species
Shuvuuia deserti Chiappe et al., 1998
Type species
From Latin 'deserti' meaning 'of the desert', referring to the arid Mongolian habitat where the holotype was found.

Notable specimens
-
IGM 100/977
Paleontological Center, Mongolian Academy of Sciences exceptional preservation
Found surrounded by small, hollow, tube-like structures resembling the rachis of modern bird feathers. Biochemical analyses detected decay products of beta-keratin and an absence of alpha-keratin, indicating Shuvuuia likely possessed a coat of feathers.
