Open Paleo
A community-maintained phylogenetic dataset for paleontology. Every genus, clade and value in it is backed by published literature.
Genera through time
How many genera the dataset holds from each stage, from the Carnian to the Maastrichtian. A genus whose type species spans several stages counts in each, and long stages such as the Campanian hold more genera partly because they last longer. Select a stage or period to see its genera.
Major groups
-
Theropoda 518 genera
Theropoda is one of the three major clades of dinosaurs, alongside Ornithischia and Sauropodomorpha, and is generally grouped among the saurischians as a nearer relative of the sauropodomorphs.
-
Sauropodomorpha 398 genera
Sauropodomorpha is a clade of saurischian dinosaurs that includes the long-necked, herbivorous sauropods together with their earlier relatives, the basal forms traditionally grouped as "prosauropods."
-
Thyreophora 123 genera
Thyreophora, meaning "shield bearers," is a clade of armored ornithischian dinosaurs.
-
Ornithopoda 205 genera
Ornithopoda, meaning "bird feet," is a clade of ornithischian dinosaurs that includes the iguanodonts and hadrosaurs along with a range of smaller, more basal members.
-
Ceratopsia 92 genera
Ceratopsia is a group of beaked, herbivorous ornithischian dinosaurs, popularly known as the horned dinosaurs, that lived from the Late Jurassic to the end of the Cretaceous across what are now Asia, North America, and Europe.
-
Pachycephalosauria 19 genera
Pachycephalosauria, meaning "thick-headed lizards," is a clade of ornithischian dinosaurs that together with the horned ceratopsians makes up the group Marginocephalia.
