Lufengosaurus

Young, 1940 LOO-FUHNG-o-SAWR-us

Named for Lufeng, a county in Yunnan Province, China where it was found, combined with Greek 'sauros' meaning 'lizard', hence 'Lufeng lizard'. The species name honors German paleontologist Friedrich von Huene.

201.4–192.9 million years ago Hettangian–Sinemurian, Early Jurassic
Early Jurassic stages

Lufengosaurus is a genus of massospondylid dinosaur which lived during the Early Jurassic period in what is now southwestern China.

Diagnosis

  1. Distinct tuberosity on the lateral surface of the ascending process of the maxilla (absent in other prosauropods).
  2. Low boss on the central portion of the jugal, at the junction of its three rami (maxillary, postorbital, and quadratojugal processes).
  3. Prominent boss on the dorsal surface of the rostrolateral process of the parietal.
  4. Ridge along the caudal part of the lateral surface of the maxilla, forming the dorsal boundary of a shallow buccal emargination.

Recent work indicates G. sinensis is referable to Lufengosaurus huenei.

Synonyms of the genus

Lufengocephalus possible subjective Olshevsky (1991) treats Lufengocephalus as a senior synonym of Tawasaurus and so a junior synonym of Lufengosaurus, resting that on a personal communication; Tawasaurus is itself regarded as undiagnostic.
Tawasaurus junior subjective Now interpreted as juvenile material of Lufengosaurus.
