Mongolostegus

Tumanova & Alifanov, 2018 mon-GO-lo-STEG-us

From 'Mongol' (Mongolia, where it was found) and Greek 'stegos' (roof); meaning 'Mongolian roof', referencing Mongolia and its classification as a stegosaur.

Early Cretaceous stages

Mongolostegus is an extinct genus of stegosaurian dinosaurs from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian-Albian ages) Zuunbayan Formation of Mongolia. The genus contains a single species, Mongolostegus exspectabilis, known from a fragmentary single specimen representing the first stegosaur named from Mongolia. It is one of the youngest known stegosaurs, along with Yanbeilong and an unnamed species from the Hekou Group of China. In contrast to these taxa, which are members of the late-diverging stegosaur subfamily Stegosaurinae, Mongolostegus may have affinities to more basal taxa such as the Huayangosauridae.

Under dispute

Mongolostegus is known from very fragmentary material and behaves as a rogue taxon; Sánchez-Fenollosa and Cobos (2025) recover it as either a huayangosaurid or an early-diverging stegosaurid and exclude it from their primary analysis. It is placed at Stegosauria incertae sedis.

Diagnosis

  1. Ratio of neural spine height to caudal vertebral centrum height 1.5:1
  2. Apices of neural spines nonexpanded and nondoubled
  3. Neural spines of first five caudal vertebrae inclined distally
  4. Bases of transverse processes of vertebrae 1–5 displaced posteriorly
  5. Pubis massive with strongly thickened acetabular portion
  6. Postpubis rounded in distal cross-section without narrowing characteristic of other stegosaurs

Species

Mongolostegus exspectabilis Tumanova & Alifanov, 2018

Type species

From Latin 'exspectabilis' meaning 'expected for a long time', reflecting that a Mongolian stegosaur had long been anticipated before this discovery.
