Huayangosaurus is a genus of stegosaurian dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic of China. The name derives from "Huayang" (華陽), an alternate name for Sichuan (the province where it was discovered), and "saurus", meaning "lizard". It lived during the Bathonian to Callovian stages, around 165 million years ago, some 20 million years before its famous relative, Stegosaurus appeared in North America. At only approximately 4 meters (13 ft) long, it was also much smaller than its famous cousin. Found in the Lower Shaximiao Formation, Huayangosaurus shared the local Middle Jurassic landscape with the sauropods Shunosaurus, Datousaurus, Omeisaurus and Protognathosaurus, the ornithopod Xiaosaurus and the carnivorous Gasosaurus.

Under dispute

Huayangosaurus is an early-diverging stegosaur in the preferred analysis of each work read, though not always the earliest (Maidment and colleagues 2008). It is the type of Huayangosauridae, defined by Madzia and colleagues (2021) as all taxa closer to Huayangosaurus than to Stegosaurus, but the clade's content differs between analyses: Huayangosaurus and Chungkingosaurus only in the reference phylogeny of Madzia and colleagues (2021), five genera without Chungkingosaurus in most analyses of Sánchez-Fenollosa and Cobos (2025), and no such clade in Raven and colleagues (2023). Huayangosaurus is therefore placed at Stegosauria incertae sedis.

Diagnosis

  1. Premaxilla bears teeth, a primitive feature absent in all other known stegosaurs
  2. Small triangular antorbital fenestra anterior to the orbit
  3. Two supraorbital bones above the orbit
  4. Angular bone with a small mandibular foramen on its upper margin
  5. Four sacral vertebrae firmly fused; sacral centrum lacks pleurocoels; dorsal surface of sacrum not closed
  6. Cervical dermal ossicles rounded-oval; dorsal dermal ossicles narrow and spear-shaped

A referred skeleton more complete than the partial holotype, preserving anatomy the type lacks: a complete shoulder girdle, a humerus, both ilia, a pubic bone, both ischia, and eleven plates, substantially extending knowledge of the genus.
